Ecomoms

February 16th, 2008 · 4 Comments ·

I hadn’t heard this term before, but I like it- Ecomoms.  While I’ve been involved in environmental projects for years, I can certainly say that my commitment became more pressing after the birth of my son and the devastation of my home town of New Orleans.  Everywhere I look, I see something to change: the plastic toys, disposable bibs and rampant air-conditioner abuse at my son’s pricey daycare make me cringe. How can I balance is his physical safety and intellectual stimulation with my desire to work and protect the environment?  An Ecomom dilemma.

Every little change helps.  At a baby shower I recently attended, as a nod to my continuous verbal tree-hugging, the coordinators asked everyone to bring eco-friendly gifts wrapped in recycled paper, newspaper, used gift bags, etc.  I saw a lot of chlorine-free diapers, and one lady brought baby clothes wrapped in banana leaves (that can be used as garden compost), which everyone at the party pointed out to me, several times. It did make for a very entertaining shower, and it made me happy, to see another large group of women trying to include environmental concerns in their daily life.

    Hi there,
I’m the Media Coordinator for the Holistic Moms Network (HMN), a national non-profit connecting parents who are passionate about holistic health and green living. HMN was founded in 2002 by a handful of moms; today we have over 115 chapters in over 30 states across North America hosting monthly meetings and playgroups. Members have access to a dynamic e-mail loop where they can share life-changing information, advice, and encouragement and make a positive difference within their families and their communities. Topics on the e-mail loop have included: breastfeeding, positive discipline, finding holistic remedies for the flu and other ailments, recipes for making your own non-toxic household cleaners, vaccines, organic food, and concern about mercury in CFL bulbs, to name a few. HMN has just published a wonderful cookbook called Growing Healthy Families: Cooking With Holistic Moms, which contains over 300 recipes from our diverse membership, as well as a very helpful section of recipes in the back for homemade baby wipes and household cleaners. The book can be ordered from our website at http://www.holisticmoms.org or by calling (877) HOL-MOMS.

Things that we do to help the eco-system ~ We are using Non Toxic Laundry and Cleaning Products in our home because they are products that are Scientifically Proven to be environmentally friendly.

In addition to using Shaklee products, my husband and I maintain a half acre nature preserve on our property. We also have bat houses ~ a hummingbird and butterfly sanctuary ~ We have raised several broods of Monarch Butterflies during the period when the Monarch population was at risk ~ We strongly support the environment and a natural way of life. We provide a huge community garden, yearly ~ where we invite our neighbors to participate in planting their organic vegetable gardens. We have planted over 20 trees on our property to help clean up the air. Part of the money that Shaklee generates off my business goes to plant trees. They have planted over 350,000 trees in the past two years, with a goal of one million. My husband has even relocated several bats in hibernation that he uncovered while he was renovating an old house.

Has anyone considered buying non toxic cleaners and laundry products~ that has the Scientific Research Proof behind it ~ to SUPPORT the belief of being non toxic for our families and our environment?? There is also an incredible business that you can build for yourself ~ You help improve the health of your family and friends ~ Plus the environment ~ My business sustains 25% of my families economic needs and it continues to grow. That is pretty good considering I only started this business
    2 ½ years ago.

In the final analysis ~ We have chosen to help the environment by putting our words into action thru our business and our everyday choices. If you are interested in non toxic products or building a business by helping others improve their health ~ ubewealthy@yahoo.com or http://www.shaklee.net/RuDreamin
