How many bottles of water does it take to create one bottle of water?

The other day, a local radio station DJ went on a diatribe about wasteful plastic water bottles.  He mentioned that the equivalent of five or six bottles of water were used to cool the plastic while manufacturing a single plastic water bottle.  This doesn’t even include the amount of water lost in some filtering processes to create the contents of one bottle of water.  I’m always happy to see another example of environmentalism coming over the airwaves.

Around this same time I received an email about the design contest for the Sigg reusable/recyclable lined aluminum bottle.  While I hope Sigg uses recycled aluminum in their products (and thus are drinking their own juice); either way, reusable products are preferable to the constant creation of more petrochemically-sourced plastic bottles.  We need to destroy the market demand for these quickly disposable products- they’re energy intensive in their creation, and clog landfills following their quick use and disposal.
