Green Vanity Fair

April 26th, 2007 · 2 Comments ·

Checking out of the grocery store the other day, I was lured in by Vanity Fair’s 2nd annual green issue. I’ve held to my rule for about the last year of not buying magazines; I love them, but I read them in a couple of hours and then feel guilty about the wasted paper. I feel much better about checking magazines out of the library and then returning them for other’s use. On this occasion, though, after some internal debate, I decided this issue might be the sort of issue I’d like to keep.
So I bought the magazine; I’m about halfway through right now. I love the article on Rush Limbaugh- (notice I am deliberately not linking to anything about him). It’s a huge issue with the environmental movement that well known talking heads ridicule and marginalize it. Why we let a known addict (who isn’t properly caring for himself) define the air we breathe is another issue; but he certainly does damage the movement. It reminds me of what I’ve read about the Women’s Suffrage movement: one thing people never remember is how much ridicule these women endured trying to secure the right for women to vote. Once again we need to overcome ridicule, apathy and inertia.

I just picked up the issue too, it is a good read. There is much rhetoric from the right debunking guys like Leonardo DeCaprio, Al Gore, Sheryl Crow and the like. Vanity Fair spent much time countering these arguements as Rush Limbough calls them “Hippie Dip Whackos”. It is important for the Green movement to disect Big Oil’s clever stone walling the greens efforts to get its message out.

I recommned the magazine to everyone. I am not going to let this issue collect dust under my coffee table, and instead pass it on to a friend on the condition they too pass it on.
