This article written by Thomas Friedman may be the best article I’ve ever read. I was going to call it a green article, but that is too limiting- it’s just, simply, an excellent article. It touches history, foreign affairs, political stability, Iraq, economics and so much more. It actually is a bit more like a short book than an article.
Another simple truth, deeply embedded with so may others in the depths of this article: Let’s get the best minds back out of hedge funds and into innovation. So many of us left engineering as we started to see our jobs go overseas, as engineers over 40 were laid off in favor of the next batch of college grads, and as we worked on the next little consumer gadget that we wouldn’t buy for our own children. High finance had so much money to offer; but we’ve left behind our innovation in favor of quick returns. At the end of the day, we can’t be a nation of managers with all of our research performed overseas. We need to get back in the game and fight for the solution to the problems we’ve already created.
