Pressure those suppliers, HP!

I’m happy to see HP’s announcement this week: “HP to Reduce its Global Energy Use 20 Percent by 2010.” I get excited anytime a large, established corporation sounds even remotely green. Of course, if HP achieves this goal by pushing more energy-using products onto the planet instead of by retrofitting older products, the cumulative effect will not be significant. Using less energy per product for many more products isn’t going to solve the problems of energy-creation pollution, but it is still a step in the right direction.
HP needs to push hard on their supply chain to multiply this initiative’s impact: while HP is a big player, if they could bring multiple suppliers around the world to increased efficiency that would really make this something to write about. I still would love to see HP pull solar panels into their consumer-device designs, also, and take their products completely off the energy grid.
