Reel men (and women) push reel mowers

March 19th, 2007 · No Comments ·

After three years of home ownership, we finally broke down and bought a lawn mower yesterday. Our lawn service uses such large, gas-powered equipment on our half-dead lawn- we were long-overdue for a change.  I’ve been trying to replace our grass with native plantings, but I’m moving slower than I had hoped.

I’m really surprised my husband agreed to get a reel mower, but not only did he go buy it yesterday, he really liked it!  I could easily cut our lawn, also- it’s probably the first time a couple has ever debated who gets to mow the lawn. Granted, our grass isn’t very thick or tall after the drought of ‘06/’07, but it was still easy cutting, very quiet, and good exercise. My in-laws were in town, also, and now they want one, too.   Excellent!

I read a NY Times article recently that mowing a lawn for one hour with a gas mower is similar pollution as driving a car from NYC to Washington D.C.  Yet another area to green my lifestyle.
