Google In the Sun

October 30th, 2006 · No Comments ·

Google is very good at tapping into new markets; web searches, web advertising, and so much more.  Who knew 20 years ago that there were so many billions of dollars to be made with these business models?  But the more dependent we’ve become on web tools, the more electricity we’ll use.  Certainly, all I need to find a local business in the yellow pages is the phone book and maybe an open window for some light.  But within this very successful internet business model, I give Google two thumbs up for taking their energy-intensive headquarters and kicking off a project to install a 1.9 MW solar panel array. This will provide 30% of their energy demand at peak times, and is an excellent start.  More companies should move in this direction.  California doesn’t have a monopoly on sunlight; we should be able to start providing our own power and cut a major facilities cost for businesses through much of the country.
