Businessweek is pointing out the value in trash with Stacy Perman’s recent article on “Garbage to Gold.” Rubber sidewalks, rubber messenger bags; we have mountains of used tires waiting for these and other good uses. As I see the quality of items that are donated to our local thrift stores, I also wonder about what ends up in our trash dumps. We’re such a disposable society; a little bit of creativity and an open mind could repurpose much of our junk. What about all of the paper that is thrown away? Could we mine our trash dumps for paper and wood instead of cutting down any more trees? Landfills as a source of raw materials- we haven’t even started to see the potential.
